Side effects and interactions with other drugs
Hypersensitivity reactions may occur in occasional instances. Skin eruptions, itching, seldom swelling of the face, difficult breathing, dizziness and decrease in blood pressure have been observed in connection with medicines containing preparations from coneflower.
Dosage guidance, mode and duration of use
Unless otherwise directed, suck 1 lozenge 3 - 4 times daily.
Echinacin MADAUS Capsettes should not be used without interruption for longer than 8 weeks.
Effects
When taken by mouth Echinacin has an immunobiological action. Among other effects, it increases the numbers of white blood cells (granulocytes, T lymphocytes). It enhances the phagocytic capacity of granulocytes and macrophages (the uptake of foreign materials into so-called 'scavenger' cells).

Further information
Echinacin MADAUS Capsettes is a medicine of purely plant origin which acts on a natural basis to strengthen the intrinsic defensive powers of the body.
MADAUS Research has succeeded in converting the pressed juice from fresh flowering plants of purple coneflower into a novel solid form for pharmaceutical use.
The juice - carefully concentrated so as to preserve its activity - is the sole active ingredient of Echinacin MADAUS Capsettes.
Echinacin MADAUS Capsettes are:
- free from preservatives
- free from colouring agents
- free from sugar and hence suitable for diabetics (one lozenge contains 0.003 BU)
Our long experience with medicines from natural sources, going back over several decades, guarantees the safety and quality of MADAUS products. For over fifty years we have had an active interest in the healing power of the purple coneflower, a plant which enhances the intrinsic defensive powers of the body.
What is meant by intrinsic defensive powers?
The defensive power of the body means its capacity to deal with pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungi that have made their way into the body. The defensive systems render them harmless so that they cannot cause new infections; they also speed up recovery from existing infections.
For this purpose the body has numerous mechanisms, together forming the immune system. However, like every carefully devised and finely tuned system, the immune system is highly susceptible to interference.
There are numerous factors which can upset the balanced working of the immune system and thus weaken its defensive powers:
- protracted excessive stress
- prolonged exposure to bright sunlight, as in Alpine regions, on the sea or in a solarium
- chronic inflammatory conditions
- metabolic diseases (diabetes, liver diseases)
- major operations or injuries
- long-term therapy with antibiotics
- cytostatic drugs
- radiotherapy
- extreme physical exertion
The human immune system is exposed to ever-increasing environmental pollution.
One risk factor alone is enough to derange the immune system. Simultaneous exposure to several risk factors increases the danger of overloading the immune system. It will then be too weak effectively to combat invading microorganisms and the body will become ill.
Children and elderly people are especially susceptible to infections. The reason is that children have not yet developed adequate defensive powers, while in elderly people the ageing of the defence mechanisms means that they can no longer function adequately.
Alarm signals which you should take note of
Weakening of the body's defences may be reflected by:
- frequent colds
- slow healing of wounds
- delayed recovery in infectious diseases
Reinforce your immune system with Echinacin MADAUS Capsettes.
If you think you are liable to any of these risk factors you must of course maintain a healthy lifestyle. In addition, the specific use of Echinacin MADAUS Capsettes provides a reliable way of effectively reinforcing your immune system:
- to prevent infections
- at the first signs of infections
- for existing infections
The prophylactic use of Echinacin MADAUS Capsettes is of great value in the critical seasons of the year, during which the alterations in the body make it more susceptible to infection.
Echinacin MADAUS, available as Tea, Capsettes or Liquidum, should not be used without interruption for more than 6 - 8 weeks, because the strengthening effect on the immune system may weaken if it is taken regularly.
We accordingly recommend a rest period of at least 8 days after 6 - 8 weeks treatment.
The range of Echinacin products also comprises Echinacin MADAUS Ointment, Echinacin MADAUS Instant Tea and, of course, Echinacin MADAUS Liquidum.

How does Echinacin act?
Echinacin acts as a non-specific immunostimulant. Its effect is due mainly to activation of granulocytes and macrophages (phagocytic cells) and to enhancement of phagocytic efficiency. Echinacin helps the body to cope more effectively with bacteria, viruses and fungi.
From what material is Echinacin manufactured?
From the fresh juice pressed from the overground parts of Echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower) harvested at flowering time.
For what indications is Echinacin licenced?
Echinacin MADAUS Liquidum and Echinacin MADAUS Capsettes are intended for supportive treatment of recurrent infections of the respiratory tract and lower urinary tract.
What side effects have been observed during the use of Echinacin?
Hypersensitivity reactions may occur in occasional cases, in particular cutaneous eruptions. The risk of allergy from oral preparations of Echinacin is extremely small. As measured against the millions of doses taken every year, very few reports of side effects have been notified to the drug-monitoring centres. In general, however, parenteral administration will carry a higher risk of allergy than treatment by mouth.
