Effects

Among other effects, it increases the numbers of white blood cells (granulocytes, T lymphocytes). It enhances the phagocytic capacity of granulocytes and macrophages (the uptake of foreign materials into so-called 'scavenger' cells).

Further information

Echinacin MADAUS Liquidum is a product based on natural materials which enhances the intrinsic defensive powers of the body.

Echinacin MADAUS Liquidum is a medicine of plant origin. Its active ingredient is the pressed juice from fresh flowering plants of the purple coneflower.

The natural healing powers of the purple coneflower have been known for over one hundred years. MADAUS deserves great credit for having been the first in Germany to recognise that the purple coneflower is also outstandingly valuable for enhancing the powers of the immune system.

Defensive powers - Learn how your immune system works

The human body is constantly under threat of invasion by millions of bacteria and viruses. Against these attackers the body deploys a highly complicated system of defence. Hostile organisms which penetrate into the body are recognised by detector cells, also known as scavenger cells, which swallow up and destroy most of them. At the same time the thymus gland produces special killer cells which also take up the struggle against dangerous disease-causing microorganisms. These are rendered harmless, so that new infections cannot take hold and existing infections will recover more rapidly.

Weakness of the body's defences and its causes

There are many different influences that can weaken the immune system. Among them are excessive protracted stress, prolonged exposure to strong sunlight (UV radiation), chronic inflammatory conditions, metabolic diseases (diabetes, liver diseases), major operations, long-term therapy with antibiotics or anticancer drugs, and radiotherapy.

And the human immune system is nowadays increasingly exposed to environmental pollution: chemicals in foodstuffs, poisons in air, soil and water, and radioactivity.

The immune system may be simply overloaded by these adverse factors. It becomes too weak to dispose of pathogenic microorganisms which have made their way into the body; they can then cause serious diseases.

Important note
Everyone knows that children and elderly people are susceptible to infections. The reason is that in the first few years of life children have not yet developed adequate defensive powers, while in elderly people the ageing of the defensive mechanisms means that they can no longer function adequately.

Alarm signals that you should take note of

Weakening of the body's defences may be reflected in frequent infections of the upper respiratory tract, and also by diseases such as arthritis (inflammation of joints), neurodermatitis (itching skin eruptions), herpes (small blisters on the lips) and candidiasis (fungal infection).

Other abnormalities which suggest weakening of the immune system are persistent colds despite every possible protective measure, delayed healing of wounds and diseases which take an unusually long time to clear up completely.

Reinforce your immune system with Echinacin MADAUS Liquidum
If you think you are liable to any of these risk factors you must of course maintain a healthy lifestyle. In addition, the planned use of Echinacin MADAUS Liquidum provides a reliable way of effectively reinforcing your immune system:

  • at the first sign of an infection

  • for existing infections

The preventive use of Echinacin MADAUS Liquidum is of great value in the critical seasons of the year, during which the changes taking place in the body render it more susceptible to infection.

Echinacin MADAUS, available as Tea, Capsettes or Liquidum, should not be used without interruption for more than 6 - 8 weeks, because its strengthening effect on the immune system may weaken if it is taken regularly.

We accordingly recommend a rest period of at least 8 days after 6 - 8 weeks treatment.

How does Echinacin act?

Echinacin acts as a non-specific immunostimulant. Its effect is due mainly to activation of granulocytes and macrophages (phagocytic cells) and to enhancement of phagocytic efficiency. Echinacin helps the body to cope more effectively with bacteria, viruses and fungi.

From what material is Echinacin manufactured?

From the fresh juice pressed from the overground parts of Echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower) harvested at flowering time.

For what indications is Echinacin licenced?

Echinacin MADAUS Liquidum and Echinacin MADAUS Capsettes are intended for supportive treatment of recurrent infections of the respiratory tract and lower urinary tract.

What side effects have been observed during the use of Echinacin?

Hypersensitivity reactions may occur in occasional cases, in particular cutaneous eruptions. The risk of allergy from oral preparations of Echinacin is extremely small. As measured against the millions of doses taken every year, very few reports of side effects have been notified to the drug-monitoring centres. In general, however, parenteral administration will carry a higher risk of allergy than treatment by mouth.
