The potent substance present in Reparil, namely aescin, is extracted from the seeds of the horse chestnut. When applied to injured parts of the body, the active agent penetrates deeply into the injured tissue and closes the pores in the vessel walls through which fluid leaks out into the surrounding tissues. In this way further swelling is prevented, local tenderness is relieved and dispersal of the swelling is made easier. Escin exerts its anti-inflammatory action at the site of the injury. They are employed both for prevention and for the early treatment of such diseases, and also to prevent them from becoming chronic.
